Normal operations on Wednesday, Feb. 6

The UW Tacoma campus returns to normal operations on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Commuters and pedestrians are encouraged to stay on main roadways and pathways to the extent possible, using extra caution to avoid patches of ice which remain hazardous until temperatures rise long enough to fully melt them.

Please use personal discretion in determining whether to come to campus based on local weather and road conditions.

UW Seattle and Bothell campuses have suspended operations on Monday, Feb. 4, due to increased accumulation overnight of snow on and around campus. Any updates to Seattle’s operations can be found at, and Bothell’s operations at

Campus Power Outage

There was a brief power outage across campus on Nov. 21, 2018 at approximately 3:20 p.m. Power was restored at about 3:35 p.m.

Tacoma Public Utilities is continuing to make repairs to the grid, which should be finished by about 5:30 p.m. In the meantime, power has been restored to campus, and all operations are expected to be normal.

Upgraded Security Precautions Tuesday Morning

The Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA), which holds some classes in a building on the UW Tacoma campus, will be on modified lock-down Tuesday morning as a safety precaution. Tacoma Public Schools and UW Tacoma take all threats seriously. You may see an additional presence of Tacoma Police on or near campus as they will increase patrols around all SOTA locations.

A threat of violence against SOTA was found in a restroom at the school’s Ninth & Broadway location. The threat indicated the violence would occur on Tuesday morning. SOTA will operate on modified lockdown at all their locations across downtown Tacoma, including at their building on the corner of Pacific Ave. and S. 21st St. This means exterior doors will be locked while classes operate as usual inside their buildings.

If you see unusual or suspicious activity, call 911. If you have questions about this situation, contact UW Tacoma Campus Safety, (253) 692-4416.

System Test

UW Tacoma is required to test its emergency communication system quarterly. If this were an actual emergency, you would find more information and regular updates on this blog. Thank you for helping us test our communications system.
